Beware Of Job Hunting Scams
Filed Under Job Hunting | Comments Off
Richard Killey asked:
Job search techniques have changed dramatically in the past decade, spurred on by not only the internet itself, but also by the digital economy. Websites like Monster and others like it post many thousands of possible jobs. Some of us search for jobs without ever touching a newspaper.
Whenever society changes like this, the scam artists are right in there with the rest of us. As a job seeker, you need to be diligent, and aware of ways to ensure the security of your personal information.
Here are some important facts to keep in mind when you are surfing for a new job.
(1) Think twice, maybe even three times, before accepting a job offer without ever meeting your new employer, or visiting their business offices. The scam artists will send you an application form which, of course, requires your social security number, your birth date, and your bank deposit information. They will now have most of what they need to steal your identity.
A very common scam is the employment directory or training manual. An agency will claim that the job is currently available, but will require an extensive exam. All you need in order to ace the exam is the agency’s $100 training material, which is actually just a cheap copy of a guide you can see in your local library for free.
(2) What about mystery shoppers, work-at-home assistants, and order processors? These can all be legitimate jobs. The advent of the internet and cheap long distance phone services make working from home a reality. However, make sure you are dealing with bona-fide businesses. Check with a Better Business Bureau before moving forward. Just because the job was posted on Monster, CareerBuilder, Yahoo Hot Jobs, or another well known site does not make it valid.
(3) Be especially diligent when considering a position in another country. There are so many legal ramifications and if a company is making it sound easy, consider moving on to the next possibility.
I want to emphasize the following three points about legitimate, trustworthy businesses.
* Trustworthy businesses want to meet prospective employees face-to-face, discuss their experience and qualifications, check their references, and only then, make a job offer
* Trustworthy businesses do not ask for personal information (like social security data or bank info) until after a job offer has been made and accepted
* Trustworthy businesses do not email you from a Yahoo or Hotmail account. Trustworthy businesses have a physical presence in the community.
Good luck on your job hunt. Hunt safely and make sure you read the additional articles available to job seekers at http://www.jobtroubles.com.

There is no way of knowing the people you might meet in an elevator, in a queue at the coffee shop, or somewhere on the street. You must be aware of the kind of capabilities you have and the way in which you put them across. You must be able to inform potential employers as well as the others regarding your skills and expertise. In addition, you must know how to connect your expertise and the business that you are interested in.
Uncover everything you can with regards to the employers in your area of interest
Keep yourself up to dated regarding any matter or progress made in your specialized area, go through trade magazines or professional tabloids, and go through the newspapers. Stay the Course… The WRONG Job Hunting Strategy!
Filed Under Job Hunting | Comments Off
Paul Megan asked:
Well, you’re already familiar with a traditional job hunt. That’s where you write a resume, mail it or email it to lots of employers. Post it on a couple websites like Monster and HotJobs. And wait for the phone to ring.
If it does, you may get invited in for an interview . . . usually with a lower level HR associate. Or maybe with a management assistant. If the phone doesn’t ring, you send out more resumes.
Now, you may eventually wind up with a job. But the chances are it will be after weeks or months of frustration, nail-biting and downright discouragement. And then you’ll probably have to settle rather select your next job.
The good news is there’s a better way . . . and a lot faster, too! It’s called “alternative job hunting.”
An “alternative job hunting strategy” has a totally different starting point. It focuses exclusively on what it takes to get in front of the person who could be your next boss. And then how to represent yourself in a way that convincingly helps him/her see you as a productive member of the team.
Any technique that contributes to that goal is called an “alternative job hunting strategy.” Usually the alternative technique is a departure from traditional approaches. On the other hand it’s much quicker.
Following an alternative job hunting strategy means you can be entertaining a good job offer is as little as 14 days!
For example, as a student of an alternative job hunting strategy you would learn how to recruit and access “career partners.” When you establish a rapport and chemistry with selected friends, community leaders, business owners, religious leaders, etc. and approach them correctly, they become an invaluable and almost immediate resource for you.
Your career partners can provide you with critical intelligence, open doors and make introductions that can shortcut all the mailings and phone calls and get you face-to-face with a real decision-maker in record time.
You know, so much can go wrong with a traditional job search that it’s almost impossible these days to get the position and compensation that’s right for you. Unfortunately, we have the bad habit of convincing ourselves that whatever comes along will be OK.
That’s called “staying the course.” But it doesn’t have to be that way!
An alternative job hunting strategy is a remarkable way to put yourself in control of your destiny. And it’s so much easier and quicker than the old-fashioned, traditional approaches. Isn’t it time for you to investigate how this 21st Century process can turn you into a job search winner?

New to the Job Hunting Marketplace?… Follow These 6 Success Rules!

Paul Megan asked:
If you’re a recent grad . . . or you’re getting ready to hit the job hunting marketplace . . . you better know and understand the rules. Practicing them will dramatically upgrade your response rate. Ignore them and you lose!
There’s a lot been written about how to prepare a job hunting resume and how to conduct an interview. Refer to the website mentioned at the end of this article for tons of free information on these important issues. However, before you even get to the resume . . . and before you prepare for your first interview . . . there are some basic rules that can be overlooked to your peril.
1. Make sure your voicemail greeting sounds professional. It’s a major turnoff to employers trying to reach you to encounter some sophomoric announcement that you think is cute.
2. Likewise, don’t use an email address that you think is so clever. It’s probably not the first impression you want to leave with an employer trying to reach you. For the purposes of your job hunting, set up something simple like your first and last names.
3. On the subject of emails, make sure you carefully proofread. Not shortcuts or symbols you might use with close friends. Instead use the same rules of punctuation and grammar you’d use if you were writing a letter.
4. Make sure your cell phone is turned off before you go into an interview. Nothing interrupts the flow of a good interview than your cute ringtone!
5. Dress conservatively. Match your dress to the expectations of the organization you’re talking to. In any case, no jeans, t-shirts, low necklines or sandals–even if you’re talking to some hip dot.com company.
6. Be sure to send a carefully crafted thank you letter. In it you should summarize the particular strengths and capabilities you can bring to the table.
Look, heading into the job hunting marketplace when you’re new to it is never easy. And there are many other important rules to master. Fortunately there’s a fast and easy alternative job search system that can have you talking to your next boss in a matter of days. In the meantime these basic rules can help you launch your job campaign correctly.
