Professional-resumes asked:

As a professional writing service we view thousands of resumes on an annual basis. These resumes come in all shapes and sizes with everything from clip art to graphics, bolded text and highlighting. Despite the wealth of information currently available detailing the merits of a successful resume, candidates continue to go with their instincts and turn in one resume disaster after another.

The simple fact of the matter is that employers, screening professionals or HR personnel do not want fancy fonts, highlighted text or hieroglyphics. They want a professionally formatted, reader friendly document that provides them with a detailed but succinct insight into the potential employee’s professional background.

Employers want to see quantifiable achievements. They want to hire candidates who show percentage increases, growth and increases in profitability or increased market profile. Whatever your particular profession may be, employers all want to see the same thing, results. Employer’s benefit from hiring conscientious, focused and highly motivated candidates who have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with team members to achieve common goals and objectives. They want to interview candidates who demonstrate initiative and innovation, leadership abilities and a strong commitment to success.

You may think that these characteristics come across during the interview process. This is very true; the interview process is a great place to demonstrate your personality and unique qualities. But how do you get to the interview in the first place? That’s correct, through submission of a highly effective resume that sets you apart as a candidate of choice. Employers need to determine if the candidate is actually worth interviewing. As cold as that may sound, interviewing is a timely and expensive process. It requires management to be offsite in the company of HR professionals for a significant period of time as they attempt to evaluate a series of candidates before determining who has the appropriate personality and experience to fit into the organizational culture.

The fact remains that the only way to secure an interview is to submit a strong and professional resume that clearly details your strengths, experience and expertise and demonstrates your level of commitment. It is a marketing document that has one goal, to sell your skills to a hiring manager and secure a new position with greater opportunities, benefits and rewards. Savvy candidates understand this only too well and are very aware of the level of competition within their own field. They recognize the need for a professional document that promotes their candidacy effectively.

More and more candidates are seeking professional help or coaching when it comes to creating a resume. They understand that to level the playing field somewhat, they must deliver a quality resume into the hands of the hiring manager if they want to have even a slight chance of securing an interview call back. The resume shouldn’t be a list of every mundane task completed within your professional lifetime. No employer wants to sit down and read a repetitious stream of information that relates to nothing in particular. You must carefully consider your career and select the highlights, achievements and accomplishments that proved most rewarding to previous employers and to you personally.

Think of goals achieved, targets met, projects completed, etc. These quantifiable achievements demonstrate an individual who can execute and follow through on assignments and objectives. It demonstrates motivation and commitment, two qualities that are of utmost importance to the employers of today. New employees need to be able to make a significant contribution shortly after joining a new company. For this reason, managers want to hire candidates who have the ability to think on their feet, develop solutions and find their own way upon hire. That is not to say that you will be ignored on your very first day in your new role. It simply means that employers need to hire people who can be up to speed in a very short period of time. Your resume is your platform for showcasing these abilities and more.

The guidelines for resume writing continuously ask candidates to prepare documents that are designed with the employer in mind. A resume should not be designed as a piece of art or a frivolous piece of documentation. It is not a personal tribute to your working life. It is a very serious career document that is your chance to secure a position of choice. It offers you the opportunity to secure a role that will bring you professional success, personal fulfillment and monetary rewards. It is too important to not take seriously.

Candidates may complain about the pricing of professional resume writing services, but the reality is that professional resume writers understand the employer’s needs and can create documents that truly establish the candidate as a credible and viable prospect. They understand the competition and can enhance a candidate’s profile utilizing a mix of their personal characteristics and professional background to set them apart. They understand the job market and indeed the qualifications required for different roles. Their experience both in the field of professional writing and the job market prove a vital resource for any serious candidate. The outlay may seem like an investment, but the return it yields is certainly worth the payout. For a relative fee you get to work with a professional who understands your background, the hiring manager’s needs and can create a resume that matches your skills to the job requirements.

In summary, avoid fancy fonts, bolded, italicized or highlighted texts. Never use graphics, logos or clip art and print your resume on high quality bonded white or off white paper. It may look cute on pastel colored paper, but it will not enhance your candidacy with an employer. Or better still work with a professional resume writer who can give your resume even greater credibility. Submitting a resume is a serious business and will be considered as such by the serious candidate. The serious candidate just may be your direct competition.

Resume is a document containing a summary highlighting the experiences and credentials and education usually written for the purpose of gaining an interview while seeking an employment. Since resume is the first thing that a potential employer encounters regarding the applicant, it carries a great significance.

A resume may be limited to one or two pages and can be organized in several ways.

A chronological resume highlights a candidate’s job experience in reverse chronological order, that is, the main body of the document shows the professional experience beginning from the most recent experience going chronologically backwards through a succession of previous experience. The main aim of a chronological resume is to give an impact of credibility through experience gained. This type of resume is the most common resume in use.

A functional resume highlights work experience and skills classified by skill area or job function. The objective of a functional resume is to focus on the skills particular to the kind of position being sought which directly gives weightage to professional capabilities and experiences as a backup. In contrast to chronological resume, functional resume will highlight these competencies and is most suited for jobs that require a particular skill or clearly defined personality traits.

A combination resume balances both the chronological and functional resumes, which typically leads with a functional list of job skills and then the chronological list of employers.

A resume is quite short and therefore contains experience directly relevant to the position and many resumes use precise keywords and action words that the employer is seeking for. Increasing number of job seekers and employers are using Internet based jobs and therefore an ideal resume should be long enough to provide a concise, adequate and accurate description of an applicant’s employment history and capabilities. Job seekers are now able to reach the employers through direct e-mail contact and resume blasting which is the mass distribution of resumes to increase personal visibility within the job market. The simplicity and complexity of the resume formats produce results varying from person to person, industry and occupation.

Since many employers find candidates through search engines, it is important to use appropriate keywords while writing a resume. And they must choose a file format to maintain their resume. Unlike regular two page resumes, which highlight only the recent work experience and education, Internet resumes highlight the candidate’s skill development over his or her career.

While writing a resume, emphasis should be placed on accomplishments, effective organization and more importantly the appearance of the resume. To achieve this, proper care should be taken to see to it that the font is plain and easy to read written on a resume quality paper, formatting the resume with simple bullets, highlighting the accomplishments and not taking away the attention.

While organizing a resume it is very important to start with an active descriptive action word, include numbers and percentages and restrict the resume to one page. The resume is nothing but an advertisement with the main purpose of winning an interview and to be an effective resume, it should stand out from the crowd.

Resume Help

In today’s world a resume is your advertising board for head hunters and HR managers in private and government companies. The resume needs to be precise, attractive and clearly showing your skill sets and achievements. You need to put effort in crafting your resume so that it makes it to top in a bunch of resumes submitted for a job.

The first thing you need to ensure that your resume should create enough interest in readers mind that he or she calls you for an interview. Most of the people try to write an epic manuscript detailing entire career in resume. One needs to understand a head hunter or human resource manger is going through hundreds of resume to select right candidate for company. In such situation a crafted resume neat and concise will give enough information to readar for second thought.

Let’s say I am applying for a Database administrator job. In my resume I will show my total experience, recent experience, skill set both functional and technical and I am able to give bullet points about these categories. The reader will get complete sense about my profile in first page itself. This will create interest and curiosity in readers mind.

You have to ask yourself question how you will read a candidate’s resumes. Will you go through all pages of resume or you will scan first page and see if it comes close to requirement.

The details which should be easy to spot on your resume are name and contact details, your skill sets and certification/trainings. In your first page summery block give your profile and total experience. This should include what is your current experience and what is your core competence. Once you have taken care of such important things then you can go on to next page detailing briefly but clearly your current and past experience.

Most of the time head hunters will look for primary and secondary skills in your resume. If the primary skills are in your most recent experience then you have good chance for being called for interview. Let’s see a free resume help given below.

Keep name and contact details such as address, phone number and e-mail address on top of the first page. The name and phone number should be in bold characters. Do not write your name in short form, Always write your full name.

Write short summery about your self. This should tell reader about your experience, expertise and the knowledge you carry. This shouldn’t be more then 5-7 lines long.

Next show your skill sets both functional and technical, if you have taken trainings or have completed any certifications, list them neatly with dates. The dates tell how recently and how up-to-date you are with technology.

In your last paragraph or bullet points you should include the technology stuff. Such as languages, tools and office management tools used. Regardless you are techie or not, everyone uses office management software. These tools have become necessary to know for every one applying for desk jobs. Even if you are not in information technology sector, you can still list the experience on user industry software such as medical, accounting or travel related industries.

Now is the time to write your experience giving clear information about the company/client were you worked, date period, in what capacity and the role and duties. Your role and duties should present clear picture to reader, were you expert in this role and the work you were doing as expert, independently or in a passive mode (team work).

Now putting references on resume is optional, some people prefer to keep references in resume so that it puts more credibility to resume. I would not recommend that, rather I will put couple of lines that references can be provided upon request.

Lastly pay attention to spelling, grammar and sentence structure, some reader are picky, you don’t want to piss them off in first instance.

I’ve been volunteering at a local hospital for a few years now. I am planning to apply for a new job and I don’t really have much job experience aside from waitressing. Could I use my volunteer work as job experience? Since it is not a “real job” do you think the employer won’t give me a chance?
